How To Create Playlists in iPhone

iphone playlistHere’s how you can create playlists for your media files in iPhone:

  1. The key for getting the most out of iTunes and music on your iPhone is to understand and utilize playlists. Playlists are created in iTunes on your Mac or PC, and accessible from the iPod application on your iPhone . Playlists give you flexible options for creating lists of songs that suite your mood, so you could create playlist to listen to while driving, or another for when you need to relax.
  2. In iTunes on your Mac or PC, click the + button near the bottom left of the screen. This adds a new playlist. Give your playlist a name then click on Music in the Library list. Now drag songs from your music selection to your new playlist.
  3. You can also create dynamically updated Smart Playlists by choosing New Smart Playlist from the File menu. So, for example, you could create a Smart Playlist of all the songs added in the last week, so they’re always easy to find.
  4. To add more rules to your Smart Playlist criteria click the + button. You can add as many rules as you like. There’s a huge range of criteria to choose from. If you rate your songs, why not use the rating as a criteria to choose only your favourite songs?
  5. If iTunes is set to automatically sync all songs and playlists with your iPhone, then all you need to do is connect your iPhone and sync. Alternatively, you can set iTunes to sync only selected playlists in the Music tab of your iPhone’s synching options.

Review O2 ATOM

o2 atomAlthough the o2 Atom has been around for some months now it is still one of the best devices one can buy. After more than 8 months in the market it is still the smallest Windows Mobile 5.0 device. The price is at this point is very good and it can leave the average/normal pocket pc user very satisfied.

SPEED: Speed of the device is an issue with the o2 Atom. The performance is not satisfactory on many cases. It seems that O2 is using the same processor on the O2 Atom as it was using on O2 XDA II MINI (Intel PXA272 416Mhz). The difference is that the new device has a lot more features and it is running Windows Mobile 5.0 which is more processor demanding. Things get worse with speed if you keep the version of ROM (20051129B2) which initially came with the device. If that is your case, then you definitely need to upgrade the ROM to the latest version. Even doing so you will gain some speed performance but still not enough to be consider a “fast” device.

MEMORY: The O2 carries a 128MB ROM and 64 MB RAM. This is sufficient for most users and it is the same memory size that most of the devices have, so it can be consider ok. For external memory you can also use the mini-SD slot. This could be better if it was an SD slot instead of mini-slot since a lot of people already have SD cards from their previous windows mobile devices and in addition they are cheaper than the mini SD.

SIZE: The O2 Atom is the smallest windows mobile device in the market. It’s a small size (58(W) x 102(L) x 18.5(T) mm) and light device very similar to the popular i-mate Jam. The Atom weighs only 140g and can fit comfortably into either a hand or a pocket. The negative aspect of this small “pocket” size is that the TFT LCD display screen is smaller (2.7”) and thus makes the on-screen keyboard smaller and some applications do feel restricted. However compared to some large and bulky devices this “limitation” is not of much importance. In fact we believe that the Atom is one of the stylish designed pocket pc devices on the market.

CONNECTIVITY:

This is where the Atom really wins. It has build in support for Bluetooth 1.2, Wi-Fi, Infrared and a USB connection. This is one device you will have no problems connecting to any wireless point available currently. The availability of Bluetooth allows you to use the device with almost any wireless hands free accessory.

PHONE FUNCTIONALITY:

Besides being a pocket pc device, the O2 Atom is also a mobile phone. Atom plays very well the role of a mobile phone. The call quality was very good and it also includes other features such as Call Accept/Ignore, Voicemail, Speakerphone, Call Hold, Conference Calling and Muting. For the security conscious, you can set a PIN which locks the device.

SOFTWARE:

The device runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and includes mobile office software (Pocket Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer). O2 has also included pre-installed software to help you organize your media and conduct device self diagnostics. Of course you can buy any software you may want from games to organizers and device mechanics for a very low price, so the pre-installed software is not considered a big issue.

Battery life on this device is around 5.5 hours (talk-time) and aprx. 150 hours standby.

HTC - Shift

HTC - Shift

HTC's Shift is a strange hybrid of a device. Announced before Asus's EeePC was heard of, and so before its myriad of followers hit the streets, and before Intel's Atom processor for small format devices was available, the Shift could be described as ‘before its time'.

So what is it? The short answer is; a combination of mini laptop computer and Windows Mobile device complete with keyboard. It is available either standalone or from Orange with a SIM to take advantage of its built-in 3G with HSDPA.

There is a VGA camera for two-way video calling, fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, a 40GB hard drive, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A 3.5mm headset jack, VGA out, cardreader and USB 2.0 connector are provided. Not quite the gamut you'd expect from a laptop, but more than you get from a Windows Mobile device.

If you are used to Windows Mobile the Shift is large, but if laptops are your thing it is small. At 207 x 128 x 25mm and 800g it's too big and hefty for a pocket, but small enough to slip easily into a bag.

HTC - Shift features - Verdict

The Shift proves you can put Vista in an inadequately small and underpowered computer and bring it to market. But that doesn't mean it is worth buying.

Palm - Z22 Review

Palm - Z22

This is not a new product, but it's worth a review because it might possibly become one of the last PDAs ever made. By PDA we mean a 'personal digital assistant' that is not also a phone.

A classic PDA from the HP iPAQ range - which is pretty much your only other option for a non-phone PDA these days - will have a touch-sensitive screen that measures three or four inches on the diagonal and will offer you Wi-Fi and the ability to sync with your Windows PC. In its time the PDA offered a handy way to take your e-mail, contact list and calendar on your travels but these days you can get most of those features from any decent Smart Phone.

That's great if you're a techno-junky who sports an iPhone in one jacket pocket and an HTC TyTN II in the other, but the fact is that a great many people have a mobile phone that is fit for little more than making phone calls and sending text messages. This is where the tiny Palm Z22 enters the equation as it offers you the chance to carry your data with you at a low cost. Which is to say that £75 is cheap by the standards of the PDA market but it's a hefty down-payment on a Smart Phone.

The Z22 has the advantage of being small at 68 x 103 x 15mm and it's also rather light in weight at 96g. On the downside the screen is also fairly small and measures 2.4 inches on the diagonal with a resolution of 160x160, which makes it inferior to most phones.

The hardware behind the Z22 doesn't look too impressive as it consists of a 200MHz Samsung ARM-based processor with 32MB of memory. It's saved by the Palm OS Garnet 5.4 Operating System which has a smaller footprint than Windows Mobile and as a result it is pleasantly responsive.

These features combine to give a battery life of a week, which is better than most PDAs and phones can manage, but when you consider the low specification you'd hope for nothing less.

As the list of features is very short, the only options for communication are the USB port and infra-red, without a sniff of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Palm doesn't include software such as an Internet Browser but it does supply the Graffiti 2 handwriting recognition software that is well-loved by Palm aficionados. Curiously enough Palm also includes a photo viewer, yet there is no SD card slot so you're limited to using 20MB out of the total of 32MB of memory for your photos.

There's another piece of software on the Z22 called Crazy Daisy, which is an amusing game that will help you to distract a bored child for a few minutes. And that's your lot.

Toshiba - Portégé G910

Toshiba - Portégé G910
Windows Mobile devices with a clamshell format are few and far between, and Toshiba has recently added to their number with the Portégé G910.

On the outside this looks nothing like a Windows Mobile device. There is no number pad and just a tiny front screen, Call and End buttons and a D-pad to indicate it is a technology minded device at all.

The front screen is only big enough to provide a little information. The name of a caller, a contacts listing that it takes ages to scroll through, missed calls, incoming SMS messages, profile setting, but nothing like the expansive stuff you get when you open the device up and reveal its 3-inch main screen.

This display gives you the standard Windows Mobile interface and, on its left and right edges, a series of eight touch icons that variously give you quick access to Contacts, Messaging, Internet Explorer, Calendar, Tasks, the Windows Mobile Today screen, File Explorer and Windows Media Player.

The 480 x 800 pixel resolution of the main screen means it is clear and sharp, and the 800 pixels of width really come in handy when you are viewing Web sites, as many render at full width.

The QWERTY keyboard is the real reason for making a clamshell device, and it is very well implemented here. Toshiba has made room for an inverted T of cursor control keys and the QWERTY keys themselves are large. Inevitable compromises have had to be made to deal with the minimal space available, and in this case these include an embedded rather than separate number row and a ‘£' sign that is only accessible if you call up an on-screen symbols bank.

This is a well specified device with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS among its features. A 2-megapixel camera sits on the back, there is HSDPA support and a secondary camera for video calling. This is next to the screen inside the clamshell, so you can't make video calls with the device closed.

You can photograph text with the main camera and have it turned into editable text by some built-in software: this did not work quite as well as we'd have liked, but it could be helpful in some situations.

Toshiba includes the Opera Web browser. For us this is far superior to Microsoft's own offering and helps you take advantage of the wide screen. The Picsel viewer is also here, so you can read documents such as e-mail attachments in a range of formats.

And there is a fingerprint sensor. This sits along one of the long edges of the casing and you can use it for device security as well as assigning finger scans to applications for quick launch - one fingerprint per application.

Toshiba - Portégé G910 features - Verdict

Toshiba is definitely targeting the business community with the Portégé G910, and it might appeal to anyone looking for a different styling and a capable device. At 183g in weight, though, you'll need big pockets to carry it around.

E-TEN - Glofiish M810

E-TEN is getting quite a name for itself as a supplier of Windows Mobile handhelds with high end specifications. The M810 is no exception, bundling as it does a huge array of features including plenty of software add-ons and a built-in sliding keyboard.

It doesn't come cheap SIM-free, but for your money you get an HSDPA device with support for video calling, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, GPS and an FM radio at its core.

Physically the Glofiish M810 looks distinctive. Its rounded corners and almost enamelled sheen are attractive. Its 2.8-inch screen occupies most of the front fascia with only two softkey buttons, Call and End keys and a D-Pad sitting below it.

The sliding keyboard pops out of the left long edge. It makes the device a little large and heavy at 179g, 109.5mm tall, 59mm wide and 17.5mm thick, but the keyboard should allow you to work on mobile e-mail and type out text at speed.

If you are looking for a Windows Mobile device with everything, the M810 could fit the bill. Just be sure you can live with the flat keyboard.

MWg - Zinc II review

MWg's Zinc II brings a slide-out keyboard into the range of Windows Mobile devices from the company. The Zinc II is packed with features and could be described as the top of the current range.

It runs Windows Mobile 6.1. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a GPS antenna are built in. It is a 3G device and supports HSDPA at speeds to 3.6Mbps as well as quad band GSM, GPRS and EDGE. The 500MHz processor coped well with our demands and our review sample had 140MB of free storage as well as a microSD card slot.

The only let-downs in terms of specifications are on the camera front. There is no front-facing camera for two-way video calling and the main camera, which sits on the back of the casing, shoots stills at resolutions up to 2-megapixels. By today's standards this is below par, as many Windows Mobile devices sport cameras capable of 3-megapixels.

Overall this is a sizeable device. As you'd expect for something made in two sections with a sliding keyboard, it is a bit thick at 18mm. It is 109mm tall and 59mm wide. But this isn't wildly out of keeping with other Windows Mobile devices that have a sliding keyboard (except for HTC's new, small, Touch Pro, that is).

MWg - Zinc II features - Verdict

The Zinc II is hampered by its keyboard which is not designed for fast use. It has a good set of features, though, and unless you want a video calling camera it is worth a look.

BenQ's E72 reviews

BenQ's E72
BenQ's E72 is an interesting Windows Mobile device. It has unashamedly consumer-friendly looks and packs some consumer-friendly software too. Yet it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard edition, an operating system more usually found in business oriented smartphones.

This quad-band GSM phone is light at just 90g and has a rather stylish look. Its mostly black fascia is trimmed with red, it has nicely curved edges and the screen has a mirrored finish. If you just glanced at it in passing you'd probably think it was a mid-range, fairly averagely featured handset.

However, checking off the features list, in addition to Windows Mobile we have Wi-Fi which is rare enough in a mid-range handset to cause a raised eyebrow or two. BenQ has also decided to include some handy software in the shape of Mundu. This is a unified Instant Messaging client which works with MSN Messenger, Gtalk, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL and Jabber.

BenQ - E72 features - Verdict

This is a good looking Windows Mobile handset with excellent software for Instant Messaging fans and Wi-Fi for the rest of us. It is hampered by short battery life, a small screen and a slow processor, though.
